Aftermarket head unit Bluetooth codecs come down to what each maker's documents name, and the brands split cleanly. Current Kenwood and JVC instruction manuals list exactly one audio codec line: SBC/AAC. Kenwood's eXcelon DDX8901HD spec line named aptX outright. Pioneer and Alpine name Bluetooth profiles without naming any audio codec at all. Every row below quotes the document it came from, with its access date.
Figures and quoted lines on this page were checked October 2026. Each row carries its document and access date; omission rows are scoped to the documents named.
Documented codec lines by brand
| Brand / document | What it says about Bluetooth audio codecs | Source / as of |
|---|---|---|
| Kenwood, current manuals (DDX396 / DDX376BT / DDX276BT) | "Audio Codec SBC/AAC" | Kenwood instruction manual PDF, 2026-10-01 |
| JVC, current manuals (KW-V440BT family) | "Audio Codec SBC/AAC" | JVC instruction manual PDF, 2026-10-01 |
| Kenwood eXcelon DDX8901HD, spec page | "Bluetooth Built-in (Hands-Free Profile / Audio Profile(A2DP) / aptX / SPP)" | kenwood.com product page, 2026-10-01 |
| Pioneer DMH-AP6650BT, product page | No Bluetooth audio codec named; codec strings on the page are file playback and video formats | pioneercarentertainment.com, 2026-10-01 |
| Alpine iLX-W650, owner's manual | "Bluetooth Specification Bluetooth V4.2" with HFP, A2DP and AVRCP; no audio codec named | Alpine official manual PDF, 2026-10-01 |
Kenwood and JVC share a documentation system, and it shows: both current manuals print the same one-line codec answer, SBC/AAC, alongside the same profile set (HFP 1.6, A2DP 1.3, AVRCP 1.5). For listeners that means current units cover the iPhone fully, since iPhones carry only AAC and SBC, and Android phones fall back to SBC or AAC depending on the negotiation.
The aptX record
The eXcelon DDX8901HD page is still live on Kenwood's site, and its spec line names aptX outright: a documented flagship with aptX in the official record. Whether the wider eXcelon and navigation lines shared it is not verifiable from live official pages today, and this page does not claim it; the current manuals checked here stop at SBC/AAC. The pattern matches what this archive found elsewhere in the codec world: support is model-specific, and the interesting record is which documented unit had it, not just who has it now. The aptX profile carries the codec's own numbers; pairing logic and setup live in our Android Auto and CarPlay records.
What Pioneer and Alpine publish
Two makers, one omission. Pioneer's product page for the DMH-AP6650BT lists "AUDIO CODEC (MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV AND FLAC)" for files you plug in over USB, and Bluetooth appears as a feature without a codec name anywhere on the page. Alpine's owner's manual for the iLX-W650 goes further into the specification section and still stops at "Bluetooth Specification Bluetooth V4.2" plus the profile list. Both omissions are reproducible: extract the page or manual text and search for codec names next to Bluetooth; nothing is there.
So a missing codec line is normal, not a red flag. The unit still negotiates a codec on every connection; the maker simply does not publish which. When the answer matters, the unit's own manual is the document to check, and the two makers that do print the line, Kenwood and JVC, make the check easy.
FAQ
One documented flagship did. Kenwood's eXcelon DDX8901HD spec line reads "Bluetooth Built-in (Hands-Free Profile / Audio Profile(A2DP) / aptX / SPP)". The current Kenwood and JVC manuals checked for this page list SBC/AAC with no aptX, so treat aptX as model-specific: check the specific unit's own manual before assuming it.
AAC or SBC, because that is what an iPhone offers as a source: "iPhones only support the AAC and SBC Bluetooth codecs", as SoundGuys puts it in the codec support article our bench pages cite. A head unit documenting SBC/AAC therefore covers the iPhone completely; aptX-class support would matter for Android sources, not iPhones.
Because most manuals document profiles, not codecs. The Alpine iLX-W650 owner's manual lists "Bluetooth Specification Bluetooth V4.2" with HFP, A2DP and AVRCP and never names an audio codec; Pioneer's product pages likewise list features and playback file formats without a Bluetooth codec line. Absence of a codec line means undocumented, not unsupported: the unit still negotiates a codec, the maker just does not print which.
None of the five documents checked for this page names LDAC: the current Kenwood and JVC manuals stop at SBC/AAC, and the Pioneer and Alpine documents carry no codec line at all. That is a statement about these documents, not about every head unit on the market; a specific model's manual is the place to check.
